August 7, 2011: 25th Utari Communal Mausoleum Memorial Service

The Utari Communal Mausoleum houses the ancestral/human remains of 317 Ainu, including those that were forcibly removed from their homes around 120 years ago for the sake of "development," as well as their descendants. Even in death they were not allowed to rest, as in 1963 the remains were dug up from their graves and relocated to a communal graveyard at the city's orders. Prof. Sakuzaemon Kodama, an anthropologist at Hokkaido University, participated in the excavation and took with him the remains and articles of the dead. Following the deterioration of the graveyard's conditions, the Obihiro Branch of the Hokkaido Ainu Association requested that a mausoleum be built. The remains were relocated once again to their current resting place in 1986, and memorial services have been held in remembrance since the following year.

The United Nations declared August 6, 1995 to be "International Day of the World's Indigenous People." In celebration of this historic occasion, events have been organized by members of the Ainu community every year.

There will be a special exhibit titled “Ainu Life  Kuriles, Sakhalin, Hokkaido” at the Historical Museum of Hokkaido in Sapporo running from August 5 to September 25. The Special Exhibit will then travel to the National Museum of Ethnology in Osaka and will be on display there from October 6 through December 6. 

The collection includes items collected by Europeans in the late 19th and early 20th century and now housed at Leipzig Museum of Ethnology and Dresden Museum of Ethnology, and will be displayed together with various items from Japanese museums.

There will also be several events held in conjunction with the exhibit.

While the Historical Museum of Hokkaido has a website in English, further details on the exhibit are available only in Japanese. Thus if you require further assistance (including any assistance making reservations for events), please contact AINU PRIDE PRODUCTIONS.
