January 20, 2012: Ainu Culture Public Seminar "Kiroroan"

Kiroroan means "happy" or "fun" in the Ainu language, and is the title of the Ainu Culture Public Seminar series regularly held by the Tokyo Ainu Culture Center. The next seminar will be held January 20 at 19:00:

Ainu Culture Public Seminar "Kiroroan"
"Passing Down Ainu Women's Work"

Synopsis:
It is said that in Ainu society, it was the role of women was to support and hold together the family, doing craftwork such as weaving and sewing, gathering and storing wild plants, and various work in the home such as cooking. Etsuko Hori, who is a keeper of this traditional Ainu women's work, will be the instructor at the seminar, teaching us with words, song and dance and telling us of her efforts to pass down what she learned from her grandmother and mother down to her children and grandchildren.

January 19-24, 2012: -Jomon~Ainu- Koji Yuki & Atsushi Hirata Exhibition

The cafe gallery Runan in Jiyugaoka, Tokyo will be hosting a 2-man exhibition of Koji Yuki (Ainu Art Project) and Atsushi Hirata (self-proclaimed "Jomon artist") from Janaury 19 to 24.

The two will also host a January 21 workshop on making deer whistles and drawing Ainu designs.

February 11, 2012: Riwkakant Planetarium Concert

If you enjoyed the video from Kapiw & Apappo's concert on January 15, don't miss the opportunity to see Emi Toko (aka Kapiw) perform as part of the unit Riwkakant on February 11 at the Tsukuba Expo Center Planetarium. The concert is a special event as part of the ongoing "Stars of the Ainu" Planetarium Show, which features the music of Riwkakant.

Although the date of the event is February 11, the Planetarium is starting to accept reservations from January 17, and seating is limited!

January 15, 2012: Kapiw & Apappo ~Kaze no Oto~ in Tokyo

TONIGHT - the second act of Kapiw & Apappo (first live info here) titled ~Kaze no Oto~ (Sound of Wind) will be held in Tokyo. Unfortunately, it is a packed house and no more seats available... make sure to catch them next time (and I will make sure to let you know well in advance next time)!

(Interestingly enough, the venue is the same as the very first location where the Ainu restaurant Rera Cise used to be)
