"The Famine Suffered by the Ainu People in the Early Meiji Period"
This seminar will explore issues surrounding the famine suffered by the Ainu in eastern Hokkaido the 1880's – the strict restrictions on deer-hunting and salmon-fishing that were the backdrop to the famine, the policies of the government in trying to teach agriculture and its problems, and the Ainu response.
