August 17-30, 2011: Makiko Ui Photo Exhibition @ Ginza Nikon Salon

Starting August 17 and running to August 30, an exhibition of photos by Makiko Ui will be held at Ginza Nikon Salon. Makiko Ui is a photographer that has built a long career documenting members of the Ainu community through her photos. This exhibition focuses on Asir Rera, whose name literally means "New Wind" in Ainu, and is an activist and perhaps controversial figure in the Ainu community. The exhibition highlights the works from the recently released photo collection "An Ainu Portrait: Asir Rera," which AINU PRIDE PRODUCTIONS has provided the English captions for.

The title of the exhibition as listed on the Nikon Salon website is "Ainu: A Portrait of the Wind," which is the direct translation (presumably provided by Nikon Salon) from the Japanese title of the book and exhibition (アイヌ:風の肖像).

If you are interested in obtaining a copy of the book, receiving assistance in order to attend the exhibit, or would like more information about the works by Makiko Ui works or Asir Rera, please contact AINU PRIDE PRODUCTIONS.

  1. From the Japan Times: "Photo collection depicts Ainu lives"

an article on Makiko Ui's exhibit including some of AINU PRIDE PRODUCTION's translated captions. One correction though, it should be "ku rimse" not "ku rimes."
