November 20, 2011: History Seminar at Historical Museum of Hokkaido

As one of its many seminars held throughout the year, the Historical Museum of Hokkaido will hold a seminar on a particular topic in Ainu history. The seminar is held in connection with the Citizen's College of Hokkaido, counting as 2 credits under Hokkaido studies.

"The Famine Suffered by the Ainu People in the Early Meiji Period"

This seminar will explore issues surrounding the famine suffered by the Ainu in eastern Hokkaido the 1880's – the strict restrictions on deer-hunting and salmon-fishing that were the backdrop to the famine, the policies of the government in trying to teach agriculture and its problems, and the Ainu response.
